Herbert Ray Gardner, age 89 of Lebanon, Ohio passed away peacefully Friday, March 13, 2026 at Traditions of Lebanon in Lebanon, Ohio. He was born October 30, 1936 in Georgetown, Ohio the son of the late Herbert E. Gardner and Helen Rae (Bolender) Mills. A proud United States Army veteran, Herbert’s commitment to service extended far beyond his years in uniform. He was a proud graduate of Morehead State University and Xavier University. Herbert dedicated more than three decades to the field of education. Beginning his career with enthusiasm and dedication, he served as a basketball coach at Norwood High School, instilling teamwork and discipline in his players. His professional journey led him to become the Superintendent of Lebanon City Schools, a role he executed with unwavering leadership and compassion. His tenure as superintendent was characterized by his steady presence, thoughtful advice, and a profound pride in serving his community, leaving a lasting impact on countless students, educators, and families. After retiring from public education, Herbert seamlessly transitioned to a role that allowed him to channel his skills in planning, oversight, and relationship-building as the Business Development Manager for SHP Architects and Design. In this position, he applied his unique perspective shaped by years in education to contribute towards creating spaces that would serve communities well into the future. Herbert was also an avid golfer, a passion that carried him across many fairways, particularly enjoying travels to Hawaii, Hilton Head, and Gatlinburg. Beyond his professional and recreational pursuits, he was well known as a people person—outgoing, warm, and engaging, always ready to connect and share a moment with friends and acquaintances alike. For the past 20 years, Herbert was a steadfast supporter of Miami University, demonstrating his enduring commitment to higher education and the growth of future generations. His legacy is one of dedication, service, and genuine care for his community and the people within it. He will be remembered with great respect and admiration by colleagues, friends, and all whose lives he touched. His contributions have left an indelible mark, ensuring he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for years to come.
Mr. Gardner is survived by his wife of 67 years – Lulla B. (Webb) Gardner; two children - Brent Gardner and wife Natalie of Lebanon, Ohio and Gwen Rucker; three grandchildren – Kelsi Gardner of Lebanon, Ohio, Kristin Phelps and husband John of Morrow, Ohio and Grant Gardner of Lebanon, Ohio; three great grandchildren – Elias, Cecilia and Vivian Phelps all of Morrow, Ohio and three brothers – Gary Mills of California, Lynn Gardner and Larry Gardner and wife Liz all of Georgetown, Ohio.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, March 26, 2026 at the Cahall Funeral Home in Georgetown, Ohio. Private graveside services will be held on Friday, March, 27, 2026 at the Confidence Cemetery in Georgetown, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Georgetown Exempted Village School District in honor of Herbert R Gardner.
