Jeanette (Miller) Day was born into this world on February 24, 1922 and she passed from this life on December 12, 2015. Jean was born and raised and lived nearly all of her life in Mt. Orab, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her Mother and Father, Estellene (Rich) Miller and Charles Miller, her brothers, Clair Miller and Donald Miller, and her husband, Gordon Day. She leaves behind her daughter, Connie (Day) Hannah, and her son, Robert Day, along with five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews and friends.
Jean was raised on a farm just outside of Mt. Orab, on old Route 32, heading towards Williamsburg. Her father, mother and maternal grandmother, Addie (Stratton) Rich, had a nice farm of 168 acres. It was a dairy farm, and there was much work to do. Jean’s grandmother, Addie, did much of the cooking and working with the kids on homework, because Jean’s Mother and Dad were busy with the farm. Jean loved that farm and kept it going on her own for several years after her Mother and Dad had passed. She was raised and came of age during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. The family did not have much money, but they had the farm and they raised their food.
Jean graduated from Mt. Orab High School in 1939. She married Gordon Day, also from Mt. Orab and her high school sweetheart, soon after she graduated from high school. They began their married life together in Mt. Orab, but it was soon interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. Jean’s husband, Gordon, was in the Navy and served in the Pacific from 1943 to 1945. Jean took the train to California to be with him when he was on leave. Their daughter, Connie, was born during the war.
Gordon returned home after the war, and together Jean and Gordon built their life in Mt. Orab. They had a small trucking business, Day Trucking, which delivered lime and fertilizer to local farmers. Jean handled much of the books and scheduling for the business, while her husband, Gordon, was out with the trucks. Their son, Robert, was born in 1951, and soon after that the family built a new home just south of Mt. Orab on Route 68 where they lived for many years.
Jean’s husband, Gordon Day, died at early age in 1961. Jean was left to raise their son, which she did. She also continued with the trucking business for several years on her own. She was 39 when her husband died. And she carried on.
She continued to live in Mt. Orab throughout her life until she was 85, when she moved to Michigan to be closer to her son. While in Mt. Orab, she was an active and devoted member of the United Methodist Church. She also was active in the Garden Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.
Jean Day was independent and thoughtful and stubborn throughout her life. She could be tough, and she became gentle. She will be missed by her family and friends.
