John Henry Mahanes, age 75 of Georgetown, Ohio passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at Magnolia Springs in Loveland, Ohio. He was born July 25, 1950 in Highland County, Ohio the son of the late Oren Dallas and Virginia Belle (Truman) Mahanes. John grew up with a strong work ethic, deep faith and love of family that carried throughout his life. He built a successful career in concrete forms and residential housing construction, serving as owner and operator of John Mahanes Construction Inc. from 1985 until his retirement in 2015. His skill and craftmanship left a lasting mark on many homes and projects in the community. In addition to his career, John proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserves during the Vietnam War. He was a faithful member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Arnheim, Ohio, where he often volunteered his time and talents for building and repair projects and serving on the church council. John was also a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge F&AM #254 in Sardinia, Ohio, serving in many leadership roles including: Master, Chaplain and District President. Outside of his professional and civic commitments, he enjoyed playing and watching basketball and golf and doing home improvement projects. In his later years, John’s greatest passion was spending time with his grandchildren and attending their school performances and sporting events. He was also an avid animal lover, especially devoted to his cat, Casper and his dog, Lucy. John will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and willingness to help anyone in need. His family, friends, church and community were all blessed by his steady presence and giving spirit. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by four sisters – Eva Jones, Bonnie Shields, Beverly Hawkins and Della Mae Mahanes, one brother – Dallas Leroy Mahanes and his father and mother-in-law – Donald and Mary (Hockman) Yockey.
Mr. Mahanes is survived by his wife of 51 years – Donna Jo (Yockey) Mahanes whom he married December 28, 1973; two daughters – Amy Maxson and husband Tom of Milford, Ohio and Cassie Sepello and husband Rob of Loveland, Ohio; three grandchildren – Lucas and Ryan Sepello and Emma Maxson; one step-grandson – Cole Maxson and wife Natalie; one step-great grandson – Cooper Maxson; one sister – Carla Fussnecker and husband Jim of Westerville, Ohio; two brothers-in-law – Charlie Shields of Indiana and Dennis Yockey and wife Julie of Georgetown, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 30, 2025 at the Peace Lutheran Church, 10581 Day Hill-Arnheim Road, Georgetown, Ohio 45121. Pastor Laura Shreffler will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Friday, August 29, 2025 at the Cahall Funeral Home in Georgetown, Ohio with Masonic Services at 7:45 P.M. Interment will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Arnheim, Ohio with military services by the Carey Bavis American Legion #180 of Georgetown, Ohio.
