My grandmother was 104 years old.
How lucky am I, at my age, to have had her in my life for so long? Most of my friends are fortunate to even have one of their parents still with them. And as luck would have it, I still have both of mine. How lucky am I?
But luck doesn’t ease the pain of losing someone I loved so much.
Jessie May Carter was born in 1913 on Ginger Ridge. Just think how amazing it would be to have lived during her lifetime? It would be practically impossible to list all of the advances in technology and all the inventions that she witnessed. The expansion of radio and birth of television. Transportation from carriage to engine. Landing on the moon and Mars and space travel beyond our solar system. Medical epidemics, innovations and cures. Wars and natural disasters. Nineteen Presidents. The Stock Market Crash and The Great Depression. The Civil Rights movements. Cultural shifts. Fashion and architecture. The social media explosion. She witnessed all of these and more in her lifetime.
But I can tell you she wasn’t always an early adopter. As a kid, my siblings and I still pumped water outside to drink. We would catch the laundry as it was fed through the ringer. We used the outhouse instead of running inside. And who needs air conditioning when you have an oscillating fan on hot summer nights?
The memories I have from growing up with her in my life will never fade. Spending nights on the pull out sofa. Playing Chinese checkers and learning card games; and hoping to beat her at them. Picking berries in the summer and walking from her house to the town pool. Eating her cheeseburgers on Christmas Eve. Playing in her attic and looking through photo albums. Spending New Year’s Day at her house filled to the rafters with relatives. I’m so lucky to have such fond memories.
I have two loves that I believe she passed on to me. Gardening and cooking. She was one of the best bakers around, and I do not compare. Her dinner rolls, bread and cobblers could not be beat. Her apple pies made from the green apples we picked from her orchard were the best. And I sadly realize, I will probably never again eat chicken and dumplings that come remotely close to what she so lovingly made for us.
One of her passions was gardening. And she gave me her green thumb. Looking back, I realize how much I must have loved it as our tasks weren’t always easy. We used to go to the county fairgrounds and shovel horse manure until no more would fit in the trunk. We would pull weeds and when she spotted a snake, I was on my own to finish the job. And who needs a garden hose when you have buckets?
She amazed me from a very early age, and continued to do so throughout my life. She seemed to take pleasure in everything she did. From bowling to canasta, to telling jokes and stories, she enjoyed life.
My grandmother was a great woman and I learned many life lessons from her. While she may no longer physically be with us, her spirit will continue to fill the hearts of so many people. I will miss her. But I will also have so many amazing memories in which to take comfort. How lucky am I?

So sorry for your loss, at the same time I celebrate the long life of Jessie. My mother was good friends with her, and always spoke well of Jessie. They were in the same bingo club for years , with several good ladies from Georgetown. Rest in Peace Jessie, You are Loved! My condolences to your family. Bonnie Slack Allen

I am so sorry for your loss. My co-workers and I have enjoyed the last few years with this wonderful woman. Her personality and humor always left us laughing and shaking our heads. I am truly sad for her sister Nellie, as she has looked over her the last 2 years and was able to be with her. We will miss you bunches Jessie and we love you!❤
